DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
In addition to successful unconditional admission and admission to candidacy,
successful completion of the required core courses and approved concentration
elective courses with an overall grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is
required. If the student makes a "D" or "F" in a core course, the course must
be retaken. If the student makes a "D" or "F" in an elective course, the course
may be retaken or another elective taken in its place. The Master of
Public Administration (MPA) degree requires successful completion of the
research component by completing PA 6601 with a grade of "B" or better, and
successful completion of a written comprehensive examination for the ten course
program, or for the twelve course program, successful completion of the capstone
Seminar in Public Administration (PA 6699).
The MPA offers both a 30 semester hour and a 36 semester hour option. Both options
require seven core courses and three concentration electives. The 36 hour option
also requires a choice of one of three additional courses and successful completion
of the capstone seminar. While the 30 hour option requires successful completion of
a comprehensive examination, the 36 hour option does not, using the capstone course
as the end of program assessment instead. Students seeking to change from the 30
semester hour to the 36 semester hour program, or vice versa, must file a new
admission to candidacy. Program changes from the 30 semester hour to the 36 semester
hour program are not permitted after attempting the comprehensive examination;
likewise, program changes from the 36 semester hour program to the 30 semester hour
program are not permitted after attempting the capstone seminar (PA 6699). The courses
required and available in the two programs are as follows:
